Class 29
Times for Class 29:
D Block: Tuesday, October 27th @ 1:30pm
G Block: Wednesday, October 28th @ 12:10pm
Here is what you need to do for Class 29:

1. Make sure you have completed the outline for your assigned role in the upcoming trial and that you have posed it on the correct wiki page (see your class page). Lawyers - you should communicate with the other lawyers in your group so you can divide up the opening and closing statements, and who will be questioning which witnesses. You should also communicate about your major arguments and counter arguments.

2. Final part of the MGP: Please submit the final draft of your Genre #1 and Genre #2 to Turnitin.com. Simply copy and paste your text and submit. This needs to be accomplished by Thursday, October 29th @ 3:00pm. Your MGP will not be graded until you have submitted your Genres #1 and #2 to Turnitin. Thanks.

3. Now you need to prepare a carefully written 250 - 300 word statement with at least 3-4 pieces of textual support (word count excludes quotes). For the lawyers, argue for your position, attempting not to simply repeat what the other lawyers are saying. Lawyers also need to make sure they have communicated with the other lawyers about which part of the trial each lawyer is responsible for - opening and closing statements, and who will be questioning which witnesses. For the witnesses, write your statement from the POV of your character, explaining what you believe to be the truth. Post this on your "role" wiki page. This also needs to be completed by Thursday, October 29th @ 3:00pm.

Class 30
D Block: Thursday, October 29th
G Block: Monday, October 2nd (we will be back at school for this block)
1. Have you submitted your Genres #1 and #2 to Turnitin.com? Did you complete your statement for the trial (the statement is separate from your outline; both should be posted on your 'role' page)?
2. At this point you might be wondering if you are really prepared for the trial next week. I realize that it's conceptually challenging, but it will be worth the effort. After all, the question "Does life have any meaning?" is kind of important! The following two items will also help:
  • Read over the following document prepared by Junior members of the Mock Trial Club. I modified it slightly to better fit our trial. It will be particularly helpful for 'lawyers' but is also includes good information from 'witnesses.' Being familiar with its contents will help you perform better in the trial and thus help out your grade.
  • The next document will help you gain a deeper understanding of the philosophical issues being dealt with in Grendel. Reading it may very well help you develop clearer ideas about how you approach your role in the trial. It's a letter that John Gardner wrote to three students who had sent Mr. Gardner their papers about Grendel. Your assignment is to read the letter and explain what you learned by reading it and how what your learned will help you in the trial. Write your reflection on your "role" wiki page and title it "Letter Reflection." Clarification: in your "Letter Reflection" you are explaining what you learned by reading the letter and how what you learned will help you in the trial.
3. As you can see below, G Block will have their trial on Wednesday and D Block on Thursday.
HW due:
D Block: you need to complete the above assignments by Tuesday, November 3rd. You have English 2nd block that day.
G Block: you don't have Class #30 until Monday, but you need to read the letter and complete the "Letter Reflection" by class on Monday. This will give you more time to prepare for the trial.
